Super Bowl XLV comes to Sundance Square in Fort Worth

Sundance Square gets ready for Super Bowl XLV and ESPN!

As the DFW Metroplex gets ready for Super Bowl XLV, Fort Worth and Sundance Square prepared this past weekend to host ESPN where they will be broadcasting over 80 hours of programming this week. Despite the fact that the area is bracing for sub freezing temperatures and the possibility of ice, ESPN has stated that they will continue with their plans to broadcast from Sundance Square. Fort Worth is the host to the AFC Champion Pittsburg Steelers who will be staying at the Omni Hotel located just south of Sundance Square. Fort Worth was also busy this past week sprucing up the downtown area. Many of the city's businesses also chipped in by changing the lighting of their buildings to red to support the Steelers and the AFC conference. BOURJ AL-MULOUK, Lebanon - Israel launched its deepest ground strike into Lebanon on Wednesday, claiming it captured five Hezbollah guerrillas and killed 10 in the northeastern city of Baalbek, while nearby air raids killed at least 15 civilians.

Israeli warplanes also attacked a Lebanese army base in the southern part of the country, killing three soldiers, a security official said.

Hezbollah guerrillas hit back Wednesday, firing a heavy barrage of more than 300 rockets at towns across northern Israel since dawn, Lebanese security officials said, including one that hit the West Bank for the first time. At least one person was killed and six wounded, Israeli rescue services said.

HAVANA - Fidel Castro said Tuesday that he was stable and in good spirits after surgery, according to a statement read on state television, as the communist government tried to impose a sense of normalcy on the island’s first day in 47 years without the bearded leader in charge.

Castro, who temporarily handed power to his younger brother Raul on Monday night after undergoing intestinal surgery, indicated the operation was serious when he said: “I cannot make up positive news.”

But he said his health was “stable,” and “as for my spirits, I feel perfectly fine,” according to the statement read by moderator Randy Alonso on a daily public affairs program. He said it would take some time for doctors “to provide a verdict” on his recovery.

Castro apologized for not giving more details but said the threat posed to his government by the United States means his health must be treated as “a state secret.”

Castro expressed his gratitude for the good wishes he received from leaders and supporters around the world, and called on Cubans to remain calm as they carried out their daily routines.

“The country is prepared for its defense,” he said in the statement. “Everyone needs to struggle, and work.”

The Spanish-American War has been over for more than 100 years, and now so is the tax imposed in 1898 to help fund it.
As of Tuesday, all phone companies selling long-distance phone service are legally required to eliminate the 3 percent federal excise tax on long-distance service, which had been established in 1898 as a luxury tax on wealthy Americans who owned telephones.

Verizon Communications said Tuesday that it has stopped collecting the 3 percent federal excise tax on monthly consumer telephone bills for long-distance and bundled services.

After a long legal battle and strong urging from Congress, the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of the Treasury decided in May to discontinue the federal 3 percent excise tax on long-distance telephone service effective Aug. 1.
